Off-season throwing program

Friday, April 17th, 2009

For Joakim, his off-season throwing program typically begins in mid-November, which is roughly 15-20 days after he starts his conditioning program. But because of the lengthened Spring Training and the fact that he didn’t pitch for Ciudad Obregon in Winter ball, Joakim didn’t start his throwing program until December.

For the first week of his throwing program, Joakim sticks to a distance of 90 feet or less. He lobs 30-40 throws to start getting his feel back, and he sticks to that routine for about a week.

As he progresses, Joakim throws from 100 feet to 120 feet. He maintains that distance for 15 days. Once Joakim gets his feel back, he starts stretching his arm with a long-toss program. He throws from the first base foul line to deep center field. After he finishes at his max distance, he returns to shorter throws. On each throw, he walks in closer and closer, while holding the same velocity and effort as he used for his max distance. Read more about Off-season throwing program

How Joakim Prepares for the Season

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Joakim Soria didn’t wait long after the 2008 Major League season ended to start preparing for the 2009 season.  Sure, Joakim, one of the game’s premier closers, did rest his right arm for a month, as any star pitcher should do. But then he went back to work, which meant getting into tip-top condition.

He took a conditioning program that the Kansas City Royals, who picked him up from the San Diego Padres in a Rule 5 draft in 2006, had given him and followed it religiously. No matter where he was during the offseason — Monclova, Mexico, Obregon, Mexico, or Kansas City – Joakim remained steadfast in following the program. He wanted to make certain his breakout season of ’08 wouldn’t be the only All-Star season he would have in the Majors.

While home in Mexico, Joakim woke early each morning and immediately began his fitness routine. He started with cardiovascular work. In the afternoon, he would head to the stadium in Obregon, ran the field from foul pole to foul pole, did short sprints and progressed to agility drills with cones. A typical workout looked like this: Read more about How Joakim Prepares for the Season
